For a few weeks, the world’s attention turns towards the running track, swimming pool, boxing ring, wrestling mat, hockey field, gymnastics arena and countless other sporting venues. Athletes compete fiercely for medals, records are broken and new champions emerge. Yet behind the competition lies a much deeper philosophy—Olympism.
Olympism is not simply about winning medals. It is about using sport as a means of education, human development, friendship, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence. The Olympic movement aspires to contribute to a peaceful future through the educational value of sport and to promote peace, friendship, solidarity and fair play. The United Nations recognises these objectives as closely aligned with its own pursuit of international peace and understanding. In a world where wars, political conflicts, intolerance and divisions continue to affect millions of people, the Olympic ideal has perhaps never been more important.
